C.A.E.
An obscure Independent / DIY label from
Norwich. 'C.A.E.' stood for 'Chic Applin Entertainments', and the
company operated out of premises at 50 Unthank Road. The only C.A.E.
record that I was trace was an anthem in praise of the local football team: it
was called 'The Canaries', it was by the Chic Applin Sound, and it was issued in
1972 with a catalogue number of CA-648. As is generally the case with
football records, the single seems to have sold well locally and poorly
everywhere else. Keith Stephens was kind enough to send along a scan
of a second CAE record, an EP by Twice As Nice (TAN-001; 1974) who are reported
to have been a Proggy Rock band; it also came out on the band's own
TAN label (q.v.). The company was still going in 1982, as witness a
single by The Confederates, 'The Boy Who Dared To Rock' b/w 'End Of The World',
which had a catalogue number of CONF-1. The look of the
label suggests that CAE did custom recordings, which would perhaps explain
the high number of the Chic Applin record; the prefix of the catalogue number
appears to have been derived from the artist name. It isn't
immediately obvious that the logo consists of the letters 'CAE', which doesn't
make trying to track the records any easier - people may not realize what the
label is called. Thanks to Robert Bowes for the first scan and for
bringing the label to my attention.
