GLOBE

The only Globe record that I have ever happened upon is the one shown above, which features three tracks by Scottish accordionist / bagpipe player Lawrie Adam.  The catalogue number, BEV SP-1291/92, shows that the single was a product of the MJB Recording and Transcribing Service (q.v.), of 7, High St, Maidenhead, which used BEV SP, BEV EP and BEV LP prefixes for its products.  There is no date on the label, but googling reveals that BEV LP-1257 was recorded in March 1970 and it seems likely that BEV SP-1291 dates from not too long after that.  The single came in a picture sleeve, and Stephen Small has written to say that the picture on it is similar to that on a Lawrie Adam LP from 1973, which suggests that 1970-71 for the single isn't unreasonable.
MJB seems to have operated from the early '60s until at least 1973; the BEV prefix was used on other labels, such as Holyground, Ralph Tuck Promotions and MJB itself, either as a catalogue number or a matrix number, which makes it impossible to say whether or not there are any more Globes out there.  Stephen Small has however provided an intriguing possibility: Lawrie Adam is from Lochgelly near Dunfermline, and a Dunfermline-based group called the Fabulous Red Hawks had a single out on a Globe label in 1964, 'Mods And Rockers' b/w 'Highland Twist' (GR-001).  The logo on that single was much the same as the one on the Lawrie Adam single, though the label was orange with black printing; and that two artists from within around twenty miles of each other should have records out on a Globe label sounds as though it may be more than a coincidence - perhaps a local entrepreneur or business sponsored the releases?  Thanks to Stephen for that, and for all the other information he supplied.
