GOUGH & DAVY

Gough & Davy was - and indeed still is - an old-established music shop based in Hull; it had branches in Grimsby, Scarborough and York. For a long time it sold records, and at one point it had its own label. There appears to have only been one release on that label, an EP by Mardi Gras featuring the tracks 'C'mon Be Happy', 'If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind', 'Everything I Own', and 'And I Love Her'.  The EP had a catalogue number of GDP-001, it was made through custom recording firm Pollen (q.v.), and it came out in 1977.  This 'Mardi Gras' band wasn't the one responsible for 'Too Busy Thinking 'Bout My Baby'; they seem to have been a local band from Hessle.  A band of that name from that place appeared on TV on the '70s talent show 'New Faces'; it seems a reasonable guess that this EP was made in response to that appearance.  The material on it is basically Club / Cabaret Pop, with the more ambitious 'If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind' standing out.  Pressing was by Orlake.
