HANDKERCHIEF
Handkerchief was launched in September 1975 as the Pop label of Anchor Records
(q.v.). Its roster of artists included comedian Lenny Henry, showjumper Harvey
Smith, and spin-offs from a children's TV programme the Animal Kwackers. It also
issued singles by proper Pop singers such as Patti Boulaye; but,
whether featuring novelties or straight Pop, its records never entered the Top 75.
'Music Week' of the 18th of September 1976 reported that Anchor intended
to persevere with Handkerchief 'despite low results', and it did so
for just under another twelve months. Handkerchief issued some nineteen
singles before it folded. As was the case with its parent
company, manufacture and distribution were by CBS. Promo copies initially had a small 'A' and the appropriate text on their labels (2), but the style changed to the usual Anchor / ABC one of the time in September 1976, with HANKY-10 (3) - thanks to John Timmis for that scan.
