KK / KARTOON KLOWNS
The label of left-wing organization Kartoon Klowns, which was
formed by photographer Red Saunders and other members of CAST, the Cartoon
Archtypal Slogan Theatre. KK appears to have run to just the one release,
a single offering 'No Return To The Bad, Bad Days' and 'Why Pay A Woman Less
Than A Man' by The K K Band, which came out in 1976 with a catalogue number of
KKR-1001. By the end of the year much the same group of people who had
been involved in Kartoon Klowns had launched Rock Against Racism (q.v.), which
struck more of a chord with young people than KK had done; presumably the focus
shifted to the new organization. Manufacture of the K K Band single was by
Phonodisc, and, as the label says, proceeds from it went to the Right To Work
Defence Fund. The 'A' side is in a 'funky Rock' style, with male vocals;
the 'B' is 'white Reggae' with female vocals.
