KPM

The label of long-established music-publishing company Keith Prowse Maurice.  KPM as an entity has roots as far back as the 1800s, when Robert Keith and William Prowse merged their separate businesses to become Keith, Prowse & Co.  It originally dealt in musical instruments, music publishing and ticket sales, but the publishing side was sold to Assiciated-Rediffusion in 1955.  Four years later its new owners joined it to Peter Maurice Music, another publishing company, to form Keith Prowse Maurice.  KPM specialized in library music - indeed it still does - and the many albums that it made were not sold in shops but were intended for use in films, television programmes and the like.  That would ordinarily put the label outside the scope of this site, as one of my self-imposed rules is that the records on here must have been available to the general public, but while I haven't been able to establish that what appears to be the only single on the KPM label, John Scott's 'Through Road' b/w 'Meeting Place' (KP-1; 1976), was an actual release rather than a library record - it is not mentioned in 'Music Week' or 'The New Singles' - its being a release seems likely, as both tracks were already available on KPM LPs.  Under the title of 'Gathering Crowds' 'Through Road' featured on the various artists LP 'Gathering Crowds' (KPM-1138; 1974), while 'Meeting Place' was on the various artists LP 'Impact' (KPM-1171; 1976).  That being the case, I've given KPM the benefit of the doubt and allowed it a page here.  Thanks to Martin Daughton for supplying the scan.
