MANDAL
An
enigma. The only singles that I have ever seen listed as being on the
Mandal label are the ones shown above. 'The Christening' b/w
'Bubbling All Over' by Julie Kennedy appears to have previously
been out on the Tulip label (q.v.), credited to 'Julie Devon'; its Mandal
incarnation kept the Tulip
catalogue number, T-1003, and the labels were almost identical, which suggests that Mandal and Tulip were closely
related. The 'Julie Devon' single was also
issued on the Concord label (CON-009; 8/70), presumably some months after the
Tulip release. It seems like a reasonable guess that the Julie Kennedy record
was a re-reissue from a few years later, with the artist's name
changed for some reason. If it was, the '1970' on its label is
misleading, as that was the year in which the original came out; which would explain the
apparent large gap in time between that single and Dante's 1975 release 'All Is Said' b/w 'Send
Me No Roses' (WAN-1). Another gap followed, this time of two
years, before the third single came out: Lovin' Silk's 'Silver Jubilee'
b/w 'Bubbling All Over' (868-AH; 1977). The Dante and Lovin' Silk singles were produced
by Tony Pike (see 'Tepee'), which suggests that he may have been involved in
Mandal. Thanks to Neil Thompson for bringing Mandal to my attention, and to Robert Bowes
and 45cat's Malice-Cooper for adding to the 'discography' and providing the first two scans.
