MAYPOLE
Maypole was a short-lived venture by the Rockfield
Studios, and was thus a sister to the Rockfield label (q.v.); both were
named after nearby villages. According to 'Music Week' of the 12th of May 1973 Maypole was
intended for carefully-selected artists who didn't have
what Kingsley Ward described as the 'Rockfield sound', but as things turned
out it seems to have issued just one single, 'Friday's Child' b/w 'Crazy Joe'
by Lucy Vernon (MAP-100; 6/73). Manufacture and distribution were via RCA, as they were
for Rockfield, though CBS did the actual pressing - they pressed
most of RCA's singles at that time. 'Friday's Child' was a Folk-rock-tinged song with a
memorable chorus, but despite its merits it never threatened the
charts. Ms. Vernon had another single out, in 1977, on the
almost-equally-obscure Pebble Beach label (q.v.): 'L'amour Est Mort' (PBR-3;
5/77).
