REDWOOD
A small independent concer,
owned by music journalist Graham Wood and licensed to Satril
Records. Redwood issued three singles in 1977, one of which was by
Buddy Knox, who had had a Top 30 hit in 1957 with 'Party Doll'.
Knox's, 'The Harmony In You And Me Is Gone' (RWS-5001; 5/77) failed to repeat
that success; and neither of the other two Redwood singles did any
better. The label design is disappointingly plain: you
would hope for a picture of a tree, or the rings of a sawn-off trunk,
or something; but there's nothing. That said, the printing was
red, and the label belonged to a Mr. Wood, so I suppose its
appearance could be justified. Manufacture and distribution were by
Pye, as they were for Satril's own records at that time. According to
Billboard magazine of the 7th of May 1977, Graham Wood was an expert on the
music of the '50s and '60s, and Redwood held the British rights to a store of
vintage repertoire, some of which it had licensed to Satril and to Chiswick
(q.v.).
