SKY (2)

A small independent label from the second half of the '70s.  Sky received its first mention in the music press in 'Music Week' of the 26th of June 1976, which described the new company as a joint venture between President Records and Peter Walsh, who was the manager of Kenny at the time.  According to the article its first single was to be by a 12-year-old girl, Tina King.  The single, 'You're My Honey', duly appeared, numbered SKY-1000.  Five months later 'MW' of the 27th of November described Walsh as an 'industry veteran' and said that SKYs 1002 and 1004 were being distributed through President - the labels also credit President with marketing, and it seems likely that it also handled manufacture, via its British Homophone plant.  'Music Master' gives Lugton and H.R. Taylor as distributors; they appear to have serviced the dealers whom President didn't directly reach.  That second mention in 'MW' seems to have been Sky's last, though the company continued to issue records for a couple more years.
A glance at its discography suggests that Sky was a fairly middle-of-the-road Pop Music label, though the involvement of the noted songwriter / producer Tony Hatch on the first single illustrated above is interesting, as is the presence on the catalogue of hitmakers The Marmalade, The Nashville Teens, 53rd & 3rd and Clive Dunn.  Sky put out around ten singles in the two-and-a-half years of its existence, none of which tickled the Charts.  It used the same label design throughout, though the catalogue numbers and minor credits changed places every so often and the reference to President Records disappeared for the last two records (2) - thanks to John Timmis for that scan.  Promotional copies were marked with a small 'A' at four o'clock, after the President fashion of the time (3).
