SUPERBAD
A short-lived member of the President family, run by
retired boxer turned Soul singer and disc jockey Freddie Mack, 'Mr.
Superbad' - a cartoon of him is included in the label design. Mack
had previous experience of the music industry: he released an album on Rayrik
Records in the mid '60s, 'The Fantastic Freddy Mack Show', and under his own
name or his alias he featured on three Contempo (q.v.) singles in the '70s,
'People' (C-21; 8/73), 'Kung-Fu Man' (with Ultrafunk, CS-2023; 6/74), and 'Mr.
Superbad' (CS-2085, 5/76). Superbad's sole mention in 'Music Week' came in
the issue of the 3rd of September 1977, which reported that the
company had concluded a deal with President and that its first releases were
expected that month. There seems to have been something of a
delay, as Superbad's first - and only - two singles didn't feature on
the 'Releases' page of 'MW' until the 14th of July of the following
year. 'You're Like Magic' b/w 'Let's Take A Chance' by Butch Leak (SB-1; 7/78) was
a Soul / Disco thing, as you might expect, but Surrey Sound's 'Dancer' b/w 'I Can't
Help Myself' (SB-2; 78) was Glam Pop. A small black 'A' on
the label (2) appears to have indicated demo copies. Manufacture
was by President; distribution was by President, Lugton and H. R. Taylor.
