UNIVERSAL EDITION

One of those cases where a company's main line of business was elsewhere.  Universal Edition was a book publishing firm, and the only two records on its label that I have been able to trace were promotional tools for books relating to music.  Both were EPs.  First up was a disc containing extracts from a series called 'Music For Young Players', introduced by John Hosier and featuring pupils from St. Anne's Girls School, Southampton; it had a catalogue number of UE-15419-L and it came out in 1971.  The following year it was joined by an EP of musical extracts from 'Hear And Now', introduced by John Painter.  The associated book contained melodies for children to play, and the record gave a couple of examples, pupils of Farsley C.P. School, Pudsey, dealing with 'The Workshop' on one side and children from Heslington Primary School, York, getting to grips with 'Autumn' on the other.  The catalogue number of that EP was UE-26903-A; presumably both fitted somewhere into Universal Edition's book-numbering scheme.  There was no date on either record but they were pressed by Lyntone and their matrix numbers, LYN-2176 / 2177 and LYN-2530 / 2531, enable us to date them by comparing them with those of other Lyntone pressings.  The company had its headquarters in Paddock Wood, near Tonbridge, but also had a London office in Fareham Street, W1V.  Thanks to Redpunk of the 45cat site for permission to use his scan here.
