ACE
(ACE prefix)
This particular Ace was
one of the labels of Graeme Quinton-Jones's 'Oakwood' studios,
of Herne Bay, Kent;
the other being the
1980s-only (with regard to 7" records) Oakwood. The studio appears to have
usually acted as a custom recording concern, with funding for the records being supplied by the artists. Ace
lasted for long enough to be responsible for around forty-three records, which came out over a
period of four years, from 1979 to 1982. Numbers were in the ACE-000s,
LPs and singles sharing the same series; the '0' was dropped after ACE-015. Several
Punk / New Wave bands made records through Oakwood, some of
which are now highly collectable, the 'Crash Victim' EP
by The Committed (ACE-006; 1979) and 'Future Rights' b/w
'Flowers' by The Rivals (ACE-007; 1979) being cases in point.
As can be seen, the 'A'-side labels were white
with red logos while the 'B'-sides reversed that colour scheme. Manufacture was fairly often by Lyntone or
Linguaphone. The discography below lists Ace's records from 1979 and (for the sake of interest) 1980;
the items in square brackets are LPs. Thanks to James Denholm of
the 'Worthless Trash' website for filling-in the
gaps.
