AQUARIUS
Aquarius was a French
label, based in Paris. Its sole mention in 'Music Week' came in the
issue of the 24th of April 1976, which described it as one of the labels of the
French A.J.A.C.K's. group and said that it was being handled by
President. Previously there had been an advert in 'MW' for the
10th of April, which mentioned that Aquarius was joining the President group of
companies. Most of the company's efforts appear to have been
directed towards mainland Europe, and it only stayed with President for
long enough to issue four singles in Britain, all of them in April /
May 1976. Unsurprisingly only one label design was used
throughout (1); promotional copies were marked with a small black 'A' at four o'clock,
after the President fasion of the time (2). Aquarius never tasted success under
its own banner over here, but it licensed material to
other companies and its logo appeared on Patrick Hernandez's Gem label hit, 'Born To
Be Alive' (GEM-4) in 1979. The link with Gem resulted in the short-lived Gem
Aquarius label (q.v.). Aquarius records were marketed by President and distributed by Enterprise
and Lugton; presumably President also handled manufacture, via
its associated British Homophone factory. The singles were numbered in
an AQ-0 series.
