AWARD
BDM-Award records were based in Newcastle, at 100, Westgate Road, to be
precise. 'Music Week' of the 6th of December 1975 announced that manager Barry
McKay had started a new label, 'Award', and that the first
single, 'The Drinking Song' b/w 'Benwell Lad' by Robert Barton, which was aimed
at the seasonal market, would be available that Friday, through distributors
Enterprise. The intention was for a further nine 7" records and three LPs
to be released over the course of the coming twelve months. The Barton
record duly came out, with a catalogue number of BDMA-21, but there's no sign of
any 1976 Award records online, which suggests that the plan didn't come to
fruition. The Brewer Brothers single pictured above, 'Serenade For
Two Lovers' b/w 'Concerto For The Wind' (BDMA-27) dates from November 1977 and is the only
other example of the
Award label that I've happened upon. I suppose the
company may perhaps have issued BDMA-22 to BDMA-26 between those two, but, as I
said, there's no sign of them; which leads me to suspect that the two records shown above may be
the sum total of BDM-Award's contribution to the 7" singles
catalogue. Pressing was by Lyntone, the 'A' side matrix numbers being LYN-3240
for the Barton single and LYN-4589 for the Brewer Brothers one.
Distribution of the Brewer Brothers single was by Lugton. 'The Drinking
Song' was picked up by the Dutch record company Pink Elephant and released in
that country as PE-22-175.
