BROADWAY
Broadway seems to have
started out as one of the labels of Warwick Kent's 'Spectrum Sound
Studios' of Westcliff-on-Sea - see 'Spectrum (SSS prefix)' for the other.
It appears to have been responsible for just one record in
the '70s: an EP by Club / Cabaret singer Brad Ford, which offered versions of 'Memories',
'Mama', 'Just In Time' and 'Love Story'. The EP was pressed by Orlake and
had a catalogue number of 97661, which I suspect is the reverse of the date
that it was recorded. The other records on the label that I have
traced so far have all been from the '80s. Brad Ford joined with a band
called Festival for a single, 'I Can't Say Goodbye' b/w 'Passing Strangers',
the latter track featuring Terri Sheern; its catalogue number was 18841,
which I would again guess is the reverse of its recording date. An LP
by a family band called Four-May-Shun, 'Just Four-May-Shun', also dated from
1981; it was made through custom recording firm SRT (q.v.) and had catalogue
/ matrix numbers of MJPD-268 and X/81/CUS-1041 - 'MJPD' were the initials
of the four band members. A second Four-May-Shun LP, 'Four-May-Shun Plus', followed in 1982, as MJPDD-87-268; that too was recorded at Spectrum Sound.
From that point
Broadway seems to have served as a vehicle for singles, albums and cassettes by
Four-May-Shun, either as a band or backing member Julian May, and the link with
Spectrum Sound appears to have been broken - subsequent recordings were made at
Diploma Studios, Bicknacre. The latest of their records under the Broadway
label that I have found was from 1986, though they continued to release
self-financed recordings and are still going today, under the name of 'The
Mays'. The colour, font and logo of the Broadway label changed several
times during the '80s; examples can be found on the 45cat site.
