CARGO

Cargo was the label of John Brierley's Cargo Studios, of
Rochdale. Lots of famous names recorded at Cargo Studios - Joy
Division, to give but one example - but most of its recordings ended up on
other people's labels. It did however put out a couple of singles
under its own banner in or around 1977. A maxi-single by The
Wilderspool seems to have been the first vinyl release; the tracks on it were
'Standing On The Outside', 'Walk Like A Man' and 'Someone'. The
label, which was white with a couple of thin horizontal black stripes, had
no date on it, and the catalogue number was CAR-001. The prefix changed to
CRS for the second release, 'No More Rock 'N Roll' b/w 'Northern City' by
Tractor (CRS-002; 1977); that record was picked up by Polydor and reissued as
2058-942 in November of that same year. More singles followed in 1980-81,
with a different label design (2) - most of the issues had fawn labels
rather than white ones. Catalogue numbers continued the CRS-000 series,
reaching around CRS-018. A list can be found on the Cargo Studios
site. Thanks to Robert Bowes for the first scan and for bringing the label
to my attention.
