CHECKMATE
A record shop and Country
music label, run by Graham and Sue Rowe out of premises in Northbrook St,
Newbury, Berkshire. Checkmate began issuing records in late 1976. It
concentrated on LPs, the catalogue numbers of which reached at least
CMLF-1032 by April 1978, but it issued
a solitary single, Jimmy Payne's 'Feeling The Weight Of My Chains' b/w 'Can I
Pick You Up', which was numbered CMSS-806. A report
in Billboard of the 4th of February 1978 says that
the singer was coming to the UK to do radio spots and to
promote the record, which suggests that it was released around that time. I haven't managed
to track down a copy to scan it, so I've put a picture of
an LP label up to give an idea of what the single may have looked like.
If anybody can rustle up a scan and drive it this way I'd be only too
glad to corrall it on this page.
