DEEP SOUL

A subsidiary of Dave Godin's 'Soul City' records (q.v.).  As its name suggests, Deep Soul was dedicated to reissuing Soul records of particular intensity.  It operated from 1969-70 and released a mere half-dozen singles, all of which were licensed from American sources.  The singles, which appeared in a DS-9100 numerical series, command respectable prices nowadays.  One label design served throughout, and manufacture appears to have been generally by Orlake, as it was for records on the main Soul City label.
Deep Soul almost didn't make it onto this site: according to 'Record Retailer' of the 9th of August 1969 the release of Roy Hamilton's 'The Dark End Of The Street' b/w 'One Hundred Years' had been put back because of Hamilton's death - it was feared that going ahead with the release might possibly lead to accusations that Soul City were exploiting his demise.  The article said that the single would be issued 'later this year', but in the event it surfaced in February 1970, as DS-9106, and enabled Deep Soul to claim a page here.  On a personal note I have to confess that, while I am not a Soul music fan, I think that this is one of the most attractive label / company sleeve designs of the whole 7" vinyl era.
