DINDISC
An offshoot of Virgin Records (q.v.). 'Music Week' of the 1st of
September 1979 reported that Dindisc and the publishing company associated with
it, DinSong, were being set up by Virgin as a kind of overflow label, enabling
the company to expand without overloading its main Virgin label and publishing
arm. Its first chief was Carol Wilson. Although it came
in the scene in late 1979 its glory days were in the early '80s, when Orchestral
Manoeuvres In The Dark and, to a lesser extent, Martha & The Muffins took it
into both the Singles and Album Charts. By 1983, however, it had
ceased trading. The 1970s singles had no standard label; the one with
the Dindisc logo (3) came into use with The Brians' single 'My Brother's
Famous' b/w 'Brian's Sister Sue' (DIN-7; 11/79) and was used regularly afterwards, in different
colours - thanks to Nicholas Hough for that scan. Manufacture and
distribution were by CBS, as they were for Virgin at the
time. The discography below only covers the 1970s.
