FLIGHT
A small independent
label, part of the Interspear Music Company, working out of premises
in Queens Close, Lammas Lane, Esher. Flight received just one mention
in the Trade press: 'Music Week' of the 26th of August mentioned that it had
been started up by Brian Smith and said that a pressing and distribution deal
had been signed with Rediffusion; albums by Robert Rigby and the Reading Girls'
Choir were in the pipeline. The article mentioned that Brian Smith
had had a production deal with Warner Bros previously, but this seems to have
been limited to an album and a single by Bruce Forsyth, both in 1975. A
single by Robert Rigby, 'Blue Star' b/w 'The Man I Was Going To
Be', came out in September, with a catalogue number of ETA-1, but
neither of the albums mentioned by 'MW' seem to have seen the light of
day. However, an album by the Bulmershe Girls' Choir, 'Girls Sing The
Boys' (FLT-1 LP; 1978) did reach the shops. Those two records appear to
have the only Flights that got off the ground. Pressing of the Robert Rigby
single was by Lyntone. Rigby made two more singles and
an album for Rediffusion's 'Fusion' label (q.v.) in 1979 but none of them seem
to have had any connection with Brian Smith or Flight. Interspear is
still going today (2020) as a Music Library Productions concern,
under Brian Smith, and is based in Chumleigh, Devon.
