GMC
A slightly mysterious
one. GMC seems to have been the precursor of the 'NKR / New Key'
label (q.v.). Its logo is in the same style, and on the run-off of the single shown
above the matrix number is given
as 'NEW KEY 1'. GMC appears to have issued just the one single, but it can be
found in two forms. My copy has 'The Ballad Of Glencoe' on one side, credited to Nat
Little with Colin Marr, and 'Country Roads' on the other, credited
to Nat Little & The Knights. The catalogue number is S-001. However, a single
coupling 'Glencoe' b/w 'Country Roads', with the artist on both sides given as Colin & The Knights,
was auctioned on ebay recently. It had the same GMC logo and the same catalogue
number. Presumably one or the other was a re-pressing, but
what prompted the change of title and artist name is
anybody's guess. There was also an EP by
Frankie Farrell which has a New Key catalogue
number (NKR EP-002) and references to New Key Records on the sleeve,
but has a GMC label like the one above. There was no
date on either record but New Key was active in the mid '70s, so around 1975
would be my guess. Thanks to Stephen Small for help with the GMC / NKR
connection.
