G
& S
The label of G & S Studios, of
Swansea. Judging by its products, G & S appears to have been a custom recording concern. The only one of its records
that I have seen in the vinyl is Chris
Gilbert's single, 'Love Is All' b/w 'Everlasting' (GS-1001), which came out in 1977,
but intensive research (!) has revealed the existence of at least three others.
One was an EP called 'Sacred And Traditional
Music' by the Newport Cathedral Boys Choir: it was made through John Hassell
recordings (q.v.) and had one of that firm's catalogue numbers, HAS-3065,
which puts the year of issue at 1974. Another was an EP by the Cambrian
Male Voice Choir; it featured 'Stout Hearted Men' and four other tracks.
It was undated but the sleeve mentioned what the Choir had done in 1974, which
gives us a 'not before' date. The
number of that EP was
GS-102. GS-103 / 104 was a football record, 'Come On The County' by
The Supporters with the Colin Woodman Sextette, the 'County' in question being
Newport County F.C.. Sadly it didn't have a date on it. The Chris
Gilbert single has the appearance of a Linguaphone pressing. It's possible
that Gilbert was the 'G' in G & S; but even if he was, the identity of the 'S' remains to be discovered.
