JACKSON

One of the labels
of Malcolm and John Jackson's Jackson Studios, of Rickmansworth, Herts, the other being
Ad-Rhythm (q.v.). Unlike Ad-Rhythm, Jackson seems to have been a
custom recording label rather than an actual issuer of records. As is the way
with such concerns, its records are hard to trace, so giving any accurate date
for its operations is beyond my abilities. All I can say is that
the earliest Jackson product that I have seen listed was an
anonymous one-sided single called 'The England Football Song', which was numbered JRC-0501
and came out in 1965. The first '0' appears to have been dropped
from the numbers at some point. The next single in the series which comes
up on Google is 'Suzanne', by a band named Treaty (JRC-507;
1969). As far as the '70s are concerned, Amber's version of 'Love Will Keep
Us Together' (JRC-513) presumably postdates the 1975 Captain &
Tenille hit, while 'Gaz And Debs' by Sid Sideboard & The Chairs (JRC-514) came
out in 1979. If the JRC-0500 / JRC-500 series was only used for singles and
EPs it would seem that the company was responsible for fourteen such
records in fourteen years, which is hardly a hectic schedule. On the
album side, the Rolls Royce Male Voice Choir put out 'A Rolls Royce In The Music
Hall' (JKS-1) in 1974, and seven years later hit-maker Craig Douglas released
the (presumably self-financed) 'Oh Lonesome Me' (JKS-5;
1981). Somewhat surprisingly there was a series of LPs featuring
vintage recordings of American Boogie Woogie pianists such as Pete Johnson and
Meade Lux Lewis; I can only guess that they contained material that was compiled
from old 78s by an enthusiast of the genre. Numbering of those LPs
was in the 1200s, reaching at least 2013. The discography below lists the
few Jackson 7" records that I have thus far tracked down; any additions would be
welcome. Pressing of the Sid Sideboard single was by Lyntone, the matrix
number being LYN-6419 - thanks to Neil Thompson for bringing that
record to my attention. The Rolls Royce LP was an Orlake
product.
