LIVERPOOL SOUND (ENTERPRISES)
Liverpool Sound (Enterprises) was based in
Kirkby. It was run by Harold Collins and Eddie Hunt, and was the successor
to Collins's Cam Studios (q.v.). The label was intended to promote local
talent - according to Michael Brocken, upon whose book 'Hidden Histories Of
Liverpool's Popular Music Scene' this page relies heavily, any potentially
commercial demos which Liverpool Sound recorded were taken around the
various publishers by A&R man Alan Richards. Richards was also heavily
involved with the Stag Music label (q.v.). It seems that Liverpool
Sound used one numbering series for all its recordings, 7" and 12"
alike; it did, however, add a suffix, 'EP' for 33 1/3 rpm seven-inch
records, and, in some cases at least, an 'S' for stereo
records. Googling fails to bring to light many of the company's
records; the few that I have found are listed in the discography below.
Their catalogue numbers suggest that numbering may have started at
LS-1500, around 1971; by 1975 numbers were in the LS-1800s. 1974
seems to have seen a parallel series, in the LS-1100s. How many
Liverpool Sound records there were, and how many ever found their way out of
Liverpool, is open to conjecture: the fact that so few turn up
on Google makes me doubt that all the catalogue numbers were
used. Both studio and label appear to have closed in 1975, being
replaced by Amazon (q.v.) As can be seen from the pictures, the label came
in at least four different colours. Thanks to Paul Yates for
supplying the first scan, and to John Timmis for the fourth. See also 'Idle
Hours'.
