LUCKY (DL / LY
prefixes)
A Reggae label; along with
Eve, a subsidiary of Dennis Harris's DIP Records. Lucky first came on the
scene in 1975. At first its singles shared a DIP-5000 series with those of their parent
company (1), but it looks as though in 1976 the DIP label
was shelved and Lucky became the main label. At this point singles were
given their own LY-6000 numbers, which
reached at least LY-6042 before the label expired, which it
did c.1977. For part of its life, in early 1976, Lucky was one
of a number of Reggae labels - including Jama and Eve - which were handled by
Transatlantic. One basic label design served throughout, more or less, though the placement
of the minor and perimeter credits varied, and there
were also a couple of colour variations. The white-on-red type (1,
5) is by far the commonest, the other three examples shown apparently being one-offs. One
single was pressed by Phonodisc and had injection-moulded labels (4), which
perforce had to have a different design. T.T. Ross's 'Last Date' (DL-5104; 1975)
can be found with either 'Dated Version' or 'I Am Sorry' as
the 'B' side; Polydor licensed 'Last Date' and 'I Am Sorry' and issued them in November 1975 as 2058-665 with
a credit to Eve Records and a Lucky logo added
to the Polydor label (6). Thanks to Robert Bowes, who
supplied scans 3, 4 and
5.
