NEST
The label of Nest Studios, of Birmingham; and, by the look of its
products, another custom recording concern. I have only ever
seen a handful of records on the Nest label; they are listed in the
discography below. Sadly all were undated, but Jason Mills, who was kind
enough to supply the scan of the Open House single 'Mr. Sparky'
(NRS-102), reports that the Rare Record Price Guide gives 1972 as the year
in which that particular record came out, which at least gives us an
approximate starting date for the label. In addition one of the
tracks on the Leo EP (NRS-140) was a version of 'If', a hit in 1975 for Telly
Savalas, while another was a rendering of 'Black Is Black', re-popularised by La
Belle Epoque in 1977; therefore it seems likely that the Leo record was from not
too long after the later time. Singles, EPs and albums seem to have shared
the same NRS-100 numerical system, with albums having a 'BS'
suffix. Birmingham Rock band Magnum made several acetates at Nest,
which bear a label very similar to that of the Open House single. The
actual Nest label varied somewhat in design and also in colour, as can be seen
above; the one on the Bob McKinlay EP (NRS-132) was
silver-on-navy-blue. The structure on the Open House record doesn't
look particularly nest-like, but be that as it may. Thanks to Robert Bowes
for the scan of the Ricky Leighton EP, and to Hugh Macpherson for discographical
input.
