NKR / NEW KEY

A Scottish label. NKR - New Key Records - was a small independent
concern, run by comedian Clem Dane ('Music
Week', 13th November 1976). Its 7" records were mainly numbered in the NKR-000s, with EPs
having an 'EP' after the 'NKR'. Albums, of
which there were at least two, had numbers in an NKR-900 series. Nat Little's single 'The
Ballad Of Glencoe' b/w 'Country Roads' (S-001) had a matrix number of 'NEW KEY-1' but the only
copies that I have seen have been on the GMC label (q.v.). There
was no date on it, or on Gil Tod & Tiki's 'Cara Mia' b/w
'Heart' (NKR-005), but a maxi-single by Clem Dane and the first NKR album, 'Laffin' Room
Only' by Hector Nicol (NKR-900) are reported to be from 1976, which ties in with
the reference in 'MW'. Two of the tracks from an EP by Frankie Farrell,
'I'm Stone In Love With You' and 'Love Will Keep Us Together' (NKR
EP-002) were covers of hits from 1975, which again hints at a release date
of 1976 or thereabouts; that record seems to have come out on GMC, but with
an NKR catalogue number. Catalogue numbers indicate that there should be at least one more
NKR 7" record out there. Thanks to Stephen Small for drawing the label
to my attention and for providing discographical details and the
scan.
