PAD

Something of
a mystery. All that I know about Pad Records is what can be
leaned from inspection of the label and picture sleeve of the only one of its
products that I have ever seen in the vinyl, the Various Artists EP entitled
'Aberconwy Sounds Beautiful' (PAD-057S; 1975) shown above: that is, that it
was based at 16 Harthill Road, Liverpool 18. Catalogue numbers were
in the PAD-000s, with an 'S' suffix for stereo records; I haven't as yet found
any number lower than PAD-053 - a 1974 LP by Brian Lupton - which suggests
that they may have started at PAD-050. The highest number to
come to light so far is PAD-076, which was a single by Pauline Leeson with Jazz
College, 'The Shadow Of Your Smile' b/w 'The Folk Who Live On The Hill' - that
had a light blue label with black printing. The few Pads that have turned
up so far are listed in the 'discography' below, but the gaps suggest that
there are a lot of records left to find; Jonathan Pearson has kindly written
to say that one of them was an LP recording of an Advent procession held in
Durham Cathedral in 1975, which was commissioned by St. Chad's College, Durham -
that may have been PAD-059. The general elusiveness of Pads,
together with the nature of the few that have come to light so
far, suggests that it was a custom recording
concern.
