PIZZA

The record label of the
Pizza Express Jazz Club, of Soho. According to 'Music Week' of the
10th of November 1979 Pizza was formed by Peter Boizot as an outlet for Jazz
sessions recorded in London. It seems to have managed just a handful of releases,
all of them during the period 1979-81. The vast majority
of them were albums, which were mostly numbered in the PE-5500s, but there was at
least one single, a seasonal 'taster' from the Ruby Braff LP 'Braff
Plays Bing' (PIZZA-5501). The album was recorded in November 1978 but most sources give 1979
as the year of release for it and for
the single. Tracks on the single were 'White Christmas' and 'Swinging On A Star', and
it had a catalogue number of PIZZA-1. The albums' labels featured
a picture of a pizza, logically enough; it's a pity that the
ones on the single weren't of the same design - they look dull by
comparison. 'MW' gives Pizza's distributor as Lugton. Thanks to Klepsie of the 45cat site for
bringing the label to my attention.
