PLAYBACK
Playback Records issued at least three
singles during 1979-84, all of which were by Lloyd Ryan's
Express. The first single, 'Jungle Anthem' b/w 'Sold To The
Devil' (PBR-7001; 11/79) was a double 'A' side, with 'Sold To The Devil'
being given pride of place on the picture cover but receiving the 'B' matrix
number. 'Jungle Anthem' appears to have got a repeat airing as the
'B' side of the second single, 'Listen To The Drummer' (PBR-7002; 1980),
while 'Listen To The Drummer' then reappeared as the 'B' side of the third
single, 'Let There Be Drums' (PBR-7003). I assume the double useage was a
cost-cutting exercise; it doesn't seem to have been done by any other company,
as far as I know Distribution of the first single by Spartan, while
Pinnacle handled the third. Three singles in five years seems
somewhat sluggardly; but there you go. The Express had previously
been responsible for the first single to appear on Peter Vernon-Kell's PVK
label, 'Kendo's Theme' (PVK-001; 11/76). Thanks to Ade Macrow of the 45cat
site for the use of his scan here.
