RADIO EDINBURGH LTD
Scottish; but I suppose you'd guessed that. The few
Radio Edinburgh Ltd records that I have seen listed have all had 'CP' in their
prefixes: 'CPS' for singles, 'CPEP' for EPs, and 'CPLP' for LPs. They
were all recorded in the REL Studios in Edinburgh. REL had its own REL label
(q.v.) for its issues, so I would guess that the 'CP'
series was for custom recordings. Albums, EPs and singles shared the same '000' numbers. The only 7" records on the label
that I have managed to trace so far were Joan Balfour's 'Sir Harry Lauder' (CPS-024;
1979) and the EP shown above, Nashville Skyline's 'Country Sound At The Coach' (CPEP-030; 1979). The lowest number
that I have found, CPS-011, came out in 1978, which suggests that the series
started in that year or perhaps in 1977. REL had a dedicated RE-40
series that was apparently used for custom recordings until at least the first
half of 1978; it may be that the 'CP's were the successors to the RE-40s. As
can be seen from the 'discography' below, records numbered
in the CPS-000s also appeared on other labels, such as Burning Bing, Bustop, EEL,
Malt Mill, Davel and Rock Hard (Glory Hunter) (q.v. all). The series continued
to be used until at least 1987, by which
time the numbers had reached CPS-097. REL employed several independent
manufacturers to do their pressing, including Lyntone and possibly Sound Manufacturing; the Nashville Skyline
EP was pressed in France - many small independent labels
had to look abroad for pressing capacity at that time.
Thanks to Sam Mauger for bringing the label to my
attention.
