SATURN
(2)
A Reggae label. This Saturn was a member of
the Third World family, and it operated between 1975 and
1977. All the Saturn singles were produced and / or composed by
Les Cliff, who owned the label. Two label designs were
used: the first, which can be found on the first two singles, was fairly basic
(1), while the second (2) was more ambitious and came in the colours which are
shown above. Numbering was in an SR-1000 series which seems to have
started at SR-1003 for some reason, though occasionally one of the zeros was omitted
(3). It reached SR-1017, but some of the later numbers weren't used. I haven't seen
many Saturn singles in the vinyl, but manufacture seems to have
been by Orlake in 1975-76 with Linguaphone taking over in
1977 - the 'deep bevel and small raised island around
the spindle hole' combination, as show well in the fifth
scan, appear to be distinctive to the latter company. Thanks
to Robert Bowes for the first and
third scans.
