SGS
Not exactly a label as such, but a South London recording
studio. Records bearing matrix numbers in its SGS-100 series date
from c.1978-c.80; most of the ones that I have seen pictured have
had plain white labels which were then rubber-stamped, stickered or
otherwise marked by the bands themselves. The one most commonly happened
upon is the Damned's 'Love Songs' (SGS-105; 1978), which came out on the Dodgy
Demo Co. (q.v.) 'label', but other records appeared on South Circular,
Synesthesia and Industrial Accident (q.v. all). The example shown above
appears by permission of Dr. Doom of the 45cat
site; it has a home-made label stuck over a white one, and has no obvious
label identity. SGS-104, however, an EP by The Isrealites and Children of
Charlton Park P. H. School, had a proper printed label, though with no SGS
identity apart from the catalogue number (1). That scan is here by kind
permission of another 45catter, Doowopmike. The partial discography below
is also owed more or less in its entirety to Dr. Doom, who has my
thanks.
