SIDEWALK (1979-80)

A Disco-orientated label
from EMI. 'Music Week' of the 17th of February 1979 said that
Sidewalk had been launched by EMI's Licensed Repertoire Division as a specialist
Disco outlet; the intention was for it to feature 'in house' productions as well
as material licensed from America and Europe. In the event
it only survived for around a year, but during the course of its existence
it scored two hits in the Singles Chart. It got off to a good start
when its earliest release, Gonzalez's 'Haven't Stopped Dancin' Yet' b/w 'You're All
I Need' (SID-102; 2/79), got
into the Top 20, but of the others
only David Bendeth's 'Feel The Real' b/w 'Breakdown' (SID-113; 9/79) troubled the Chart compilers,
and that stalled at No.44. Several of the singles were
available in 12" form. EMI's Licensed Repertoire Division was dissolved in early 1980 ('MW',
19th January), and that seems to have spelled the end for Sidewalk,
as it did for the LRD's Rock label Cobra (q.v.).
