SKI

Debatable, this one.  A lot of non-record companies made advertising records in the 1970s, usually through specialist custom pressing firms such as Lyntone and Sound For Industry (q.v. both).  When I started the site up I decided not to allot pages to them, on the grounds that I didn't want to clutter the place up with pages for the likes of The Burnley Building Society, Barclays Bank and Coca-Cola.  As an alternative I included examples on the pages of the firms which manufactured them.  This particular single, from yoghurt makers Ski, crept under the line.  'Ski "Full-Of-Fitness" Theme' b/w 'Sweet Baby Jane' by Manfred Mann and Mike Hug (sic), had a matrix number of SKI-1 rather than one borrowed from the main series of a custom pressing firm, which makes it stand out a little.  In addition both 45Cat and Discogs treat Ski as a label; so I've decided to go with the flow.  The Theme was used on Ski's TV adverts around the time when the record was made available - early 1970 - and it may well be familiar to people who were around then.  A picture cover, apparently used on copies that were sent to stockists of Ski products, indicated that 50,000 copies were to be made available fee of charge, presumably to customers who applied for them.  There are certainly a good number of copies around even fifty-odd years later.  Pressing was by Orlake.  Thanks to James Denholm for reminding me about Ski's solitary record and for providing the impetus to include it on the site.
