SOUL FOX
American in origin but
aimed at the British Northern Soul market, which I reckon justifies its inclusion on this
site. Soul Fox was one of two labels run by Simon Soussan,
the other being Soul Galore (q.v.). Correspondence on the 'Soul Sounds' site suggests
that both were available exclusively through Soul importer / wholesaler Selectadisc,
of Nottingham - see B.J.D., Black Magic, Green Light and Magic
- and certainly the vast majority of copies currently (2022) on sale
in Discogs are from vendors in the United Kingdom. The fare on offer consisted of a mixture
of licensed and unlicensed materal, the licensed material mainly coming
from the American company Mirwood.
Singles appear to have been released in two phases, the first in
1975, the second in 1979; those in the first
had numbers in an SF-1000 series, those in the second in a 79-1000 one. In
between, Soussan found success as a producer of legitimate Disco records. One label design
served Soul Fox throughout, but the labels of the
first phase came in various colours while those of the second phase
were red. An American company called Monarch was responsible for at least
some of the pressings, including SFs-1001 and 1005. Other labels dealing
in Soul pressings included Soul Source and Out Of The Past (q.v. both) but their issues were 100% unlicensed.
