SOUL GALORE
American in origin but
aimed at the British Northern Soul market, which I reckon justifies its inclusion on this
site. Soul Galore was one of two labels run by Simon Soussan, the
other being Soul Fox (q.v.). Correspondence on the 'Soul Sounds' site
suggests that both were available exclusively through Soul importer / wholesaler
Selectadisc, of Nottingham - see B.J.D., Black Magic, Green Light and
Magic - and certainly the vast majority of copies currently (2022)
on sale in Discogs are from vendors in the United Kingdom. The fare on offer on Soul
Galore consisted of a mixture of reworks and unlicensed material. There were two
main numerical series: an SG-2600 one and an
SG-1000 one. One label design served throughout but it came in a
wide range of colours. Manufacture was done in
the USA; an American company called Monarch was
responsible for at least one of the pressings, SG-1002. Soul Galore seems to have operated
between 1974 and 1976, after which point Soussan found success as
a producer of legitimate Disco records. Other labels dealing in Soul pressings
included Soul Source and Out Of The Past (q.v. both) but their issues were 100%
unlicensed.
