SOUNDING BRASS

The record label of the Rosehill Instruments shop, of Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.  The shop was founded by Trevellyan ('Trevor') Austin in 1967; it moved to bigger premises in 1972, and is still going today.  In the '70s it broadened its scope and, under the name of Rosehill Music, began publishing musical scores for brass players.  It also started putting out two magazines, 'British Bandsman' and 'Sounding Brass', aimed at the same Brass player / enthusiast market.  Its sole record release came in 1978, when it issued an EP of compositions which it also published.  One side offered 'Four Pieces For Four Trombones', written by Gareth Wood and played by Don Lusher, Harold Nash, Denis Wick and Ray Premru; the other featured Ernest Piper's 'The Well Tempered Player', played by Maurice Murphy.  The catalogue number of the EP was SBE-78301, the '78' being the year in which it was issued.  Thanks to Sam Mauger for drawing Sounding Brass to my attention, and to Ade Mecrow of the 45cat site for supplying the scan.
