SPECTRUM (SSS prefix)
One
of the labels of the Spectrum Sound Studios, of Westcliff-on-Sea, which were run
by Warwick Kemp. There were at least a couple of records on this
particular Spectrum label: an album by the Original Tennessee Three, 'In Jersey'
(SSS-151 74), and an EP by Stan James (SSS-2012 73), which offered 'Rock
And Roll Revival' and 'Freedom Fight' in addition to the two titles shown on the
scan. There are no dates on either, but it seems probable that the '74'
and the '73' are the years in which the tracks were recorded.
Googling failed to bring to light any other Spectrums in SSS-2000 or SSS-100
numerical series, which makes me suspect that the '2012' and 151' may be the day
and date of the recording - thus the Original Tennessee Three LP would have been
made on the 15th of January 1974, and the Stan James EP on the 20th of December 1973.
I suspect that both were custom recordings rather than actual issues.
Spectrum Sound was also responsible for the Broadway label (q.v.), later
in the decade. Broadway catalogue numbers seem to have been the recording
date reversed, which lends weight to the idea of Spectrum's also being based
on the date. Thanks to Klepsie of the 45cat site for letting me know that
Spectrum had produced a 7" record, and to R.K.O. 45cat for permission to use his scan
here. The three-pronged centre in 1973 would suggest a British Hompohone pressing.
