SUPRAPHON
The foremost Czech record label, and a well-known name in the world of
Classical music. Supraphon first appeared in 1932 as the trademark
for a range of record-players; Supraphon records came on the scene soon
after. The company seems to have performed a dual function, making
music by Czech artists available in the West and enabling Western artists (such
as Johnny Cash) to be heard in the East. Supraphon continues to
flourish today; it has its own website here. In Britain it has
always concentrated on LPs and CDs; the solitary single shown above was issued
in November 1977, when the music on it was used on a television advert for 'Old
Spice'. Manufacture and distribution were by Rediffusion.
