THULE
The most
northerly label on this site. Thule was based on the Shetland
Islands and was run by local businessman Bobby Bayes. It started out in
1965 and was still operating in the mid '80s. Initially it
concentrated on EPs, along with an occasional single, all
of which were numbered in an SNI-200 series, but in 1970 it began
to focus on LPs. In or around 1978, after issuing
around 18 albums, it appears to have abandoned vinyl in favour of cassette
tapes. The few of its releases that I have seen have featured traditional Scottish material with an understandable
emphasis on the songs and music of the Shetlands. The majority of Thule's
7" records came out in the 1960s. Their labels were undated, but newspaper reports
and clues on some of the EP covers have
led to several release years being established; OldWeirdScotland and
Herestoscottish of the 45Cat site have done
some sterling work in that area, and most of the dates in the discography below
are owed to them. One label design appears to have
served throughout. Thanks to
Klepsie of 45Cat for letting me know that Thule was still issuing 7" records in the early 70s.
