TULIP
A short-lived label from
1969-70. Tulip received its
only mention in the 'Irish News' section of 'Record Retailer' of the
18th of October 1969, which said that it was a new independent label set run by
Bill Ward of Anglo-Irish group The Dinkees and their manager Harry Lombard.
According to the article the band was under contract to Mercury but
had been released so that they could cut a single. The second release, 'World
Of My Dreams' by Carol McCrory, was to be numbered T-1002 and was scheduled
to come out in November. There seems to have been a change
in the plans, however. 'Billboard' of the 29th of November 1969 said
that 'The Ballad Of Armstrong, Aldrin And Collins' by The Dinkees was to be
the first single for their
new label; it emerged as a double 'A' side, 'The
Legend Of Armstrong, Aldrin And
Collins' b/w Space Age Lover', but each side had its own
catalogue number, T-1001 and T-1002, the
second of which was supposed to belong to
the Carol McCrory single. There's no sign of that record, and it
may well have been cancelled. The third Tulip single, Julie Devon's 'The Christening' b/w
'Bubbling All Over' (T-1003), earned the label a place on this site
by coming out in 1970. That particular record was picked up by
Concord Records (q.v.) and reissued in August 1970 as CON-009;
it appears to have resurfaced on the Mandal label (q.v.) later on, with
its old Tulip catalogue number but credited to Julie Kennedy - the
Roger Wade Orchestra and Singers kept their credit. Apparently the 'B' side is
the more sought-after of the two. The label of the Mandal
record is almost identical to that of Tulip, which suggests that the two concerns were closely
related. Pressing of both was by Decca. Thanks to Robert Bowes for bringing Tulip to my attention.
