UNITY
A Reggae label; a subsidiary of Pama, from Harlesden. Unity
enjoyed a comparatively long life, releasing around seventy
singles between 1968-73; many of them had some Bunny Lee involvement. It
scored an unexpected Top Ten hit in 1969 with Max Romeo's 'Wet Dream'. Catalogue numbers were in
a UN-500 series. Most of the label's activity took place in
the first three years of its life: there was only one
single issued in 1971 and none at all in 1972, while
1973 saw a final two releases. The grey-and-brown
label shown above was by far the most common one. Initially the credits were printed
in black; they turned brown for a period (1), with UN-534 to UN-544, then reverted
to black (2). The second, yellow, design, which dropped the mountain and
the white line, was a late arrival, featuring on only the very last release (3). Thanks
to John Timmis for the second scan, and to Sam Mauger for the
third. The discography below only covers the
1970s.
