WARPED (W
prefix)
The fourth label from the Punk / New Wave era to call itself 'Warped'. This version
started out as a production company and was run by Bob Johnson
and Mike Clifford. Its first appearance seems to have been on a single
by Sounder, 'Get Down On Your Knees' b/w 'Bus Stop Romance', which it licensed to
Sonet and which came out as SON-2127 in November 1977 on the Sonet label with the Warped
logo added (1). Sounder evolved into Sneeky Feelin's and
provided what looks to have been the first single on the Warped label proper,
'Private Mail' b/w 'Only The Rain', which was issued in June 1979 and had
a catalogue number of W-102. The second - and last - Warped single was 'Strange Rhythmical
Music' b/w 'Veronica' (W-103; 9/79) by Leopards. The Sneeky Feelin's
record had black-on-cream labels rather than white-on-red ones but the design was much
the same. Both singles are collectable, the Sneeky Feelin's particularly so. Thanks to James
Denholm for the Sonet scan and for much of the information on this
page; thanks also to Robert Bowes for the Warped scan.
